Free software is absolutely free for anyone to download and use and open source software is also free for anyone to edit (eg wikipeadia)
some examples of free software are
- open office - which is a word processing document
- gimp- which is used for photo enhancement
- Audiocity- audio editing, recording speech etc
- Open Movie Editor- basic movie making/ editing
- www.blogger.com- blogging site
- Inkscape- graphics, object creation/manipulation
